Give Me a Name!

Let’s name the Basking shark of the Museum Giuseppe Olivi

The symbol of the museum is Olivia, a female specimen of the Basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), accidentally caught by the fishing fleet of Chioggia in 2003. The name was decided by the contest "Give me a name! - Let's name the Basking shark of the Museum G. Olivi ", which featured the children of primary schools of the city of Chioggia. Each class presented three drawings and a proposed a name for the shark. The drawings were exhibited on the first floor of Palazzo Grassi, while a committee voted for the winner name, proposed by the pupils of the third class of "M. Merlin " the Elementary School. The name Olivia was inspired by Giuseppe Olivi, a famous naturalist of Chioggia who lived in the late 18th century and to whom the Museum is dedicated. The closing event, held on 28 May 2011, guests Dr. Angelo Mojetta, a well-known expert on sharks.
